Take Chaos to the next level with Generate. Developed by Newfangled Audio, Generate is a marquee polysynth combining several revolutionary chaotic oscillators with all the features you’d expect in a first-class synthesizer. Create beautifully complex pads, warm moving keys, jittery sequenced basses, out-of-control leads, and ‘oh my God’ textures.

Create the Chaos

Generate is based on a set of chaotic generators. What initially looks like randomness contains underlying patterns, interconnectedness, constant feedback loops, repetition, self-similarity, fractals, and self-organization. Each of Generate’s 8 chaotic generators brings out these underlying patterns and creates an oscillator that can smoothly fade from a sine wave to total chaos, with an expanse of territory to explore in between. The musical textures created include distortion, harmonics, grunge, static, and noise—All of which can be predictably or unpredictably modulated.

Control the Chaos

Generate’s chaotic generators are routed through your choice of 5 wavefolders; Buchla 259, a Model Bent version of the Buchla 259, Saturate (from our popular mastering plugin), or novel Animated or Fractal wavefolders, each adding unique overtones. It is then followed by a low pass gate inspired by the ideas of Don Buchla. These modules combine to create a versatile and musical voice with its own unique flavor. (Model Bent is link)

Modulate the Chaos

Almost all parameters in Generate can be modulated by a combination of two Envelope Generators, two LFOs, a Sample and Hold/Random generator, an 8 Step Sequencer, and MIDI and MPE sources. The innovative modulation interface allows you to easily and quickly patch any combination of sources to any destination, creating sounds that move, and which move you.

Effect the Chaos

Generate’s voice is followed by an unparalleled EQ, Chorus, Delay, Reverb, and Limiter, all to launch your chaotic sounds into outer space or right into your listeners’ faces.

Stepped Synth Shaper

This great preset by Anthony Baldino doesn’t use CHAOS at all. Instead the interval is set to a minor 2nd and OSC SYNC is turned on, which creates this really cool planetary animation, that sounds great. Modulating the CHAOS AMOUNT with with a triangle wave creates a cool morphing vibe.

Most of the heavy lifting is being done by the Fractal Wavefolder, which is in turn modulated by the Random Step Sequencer, and the S+H, both of which are set to 16th notes, creating a jittery sound.

Finally, the LPG is set up like a resonant filter and the FREQ is modulated by a slow Sine wave, for a really nice effect.

Anthony also uses the EQ, CHORUS, DELAY, and REVERB. Delay is set up a really low mix at a dotted 1/4 and a lot of filtering, so it adds some space, without giving a super distinct echo effect.

Crescent

The core of Generate are its eight chaotic generators which add life to the oscillators. Depending on the generator the chaos can adding anything from a gentle texture to harsh noise to your patch.

The Crescent generator is great for making harmonically rich tonal sounds that are reminiscent of stacked sawtooth waves. This expands Generate's palette into more traditionally synth-ey sounds - while keeping the whole Generate vibe intact.

This patch couples the Crescent generator with pitch DRIFT and a strong vibrato for a vintage Canadian feel.

Slow Metallic

This preset comes from the legendary Chris Carter of Throbbing Gristle and Chris and Cosey fame. It’s based on the Double Pendulum oscillator with a ton of modulation to create a throbbing pulsing bass sound.

The main modulation is a straight 1/8th note pulse routed from the sequencer to the FREQ, DRIVE, FOLDS, and SYMMETRY knob, which all act together to pulse the timbre.

In addition to these the envelope and LFO mod sources create a slower, more subtle swell.

This is all rounded out by the EQ, chorus, and a dotted 1/8th note delay.

MAGMA

The Magma generator is smooth and warm, with a clear vintage tone, and is useful for making very playable sounds, and sick basses, but don't worry, it'll get glitchy and chaotic as you turn up the CHAOS SHAPE.

This patch turns up the sub-oscillators on the Magma generator, and runs it through the animated wavefolder for a deep, but punch, bass arpeggio.

Dreamy Stepmom

This preset is from Matt Lange, a great friend, amazing musician, and fantastic sound designer. Dreamy Stepmom has a pulsing effect that feels random, but also plays against itself. This comes from a couple modulation sources.

The Sample and Hold output is tied to Chaos Amount, Folds, and Wavefolder Mix, so every eighth note these parameters get a new random value. This is a different value for each voice of a chord, giving different voices prominence at different times.

The step sequencer's downward ramp is tied to the LPG Freq giving it a rhythmic cutting sound with varying amplitudes. However, the step seq is set to play the steps in a random order, which again, is random per voice, so a different voice takes prominence each eighth note.

Finally, Matt finishes off with a dotted eighth note delay and reverb.

Just A Drifter

Generate is great at making giant textural pads for a huge cinematic feel, but Just A Drifter is a very playable patch based on the Discharge generator.

The Discharge generator's chaos is quite like a bit of soft noise that modulates a sine wave. This is great for giving a dusty feel to soft pad sounds. Keeping them clear, with just enough texture to sound interesting.

In addition, the Fractal wavefolder and Low Pass Gate are both modulated by key pressure making this a great preset for aftertouch or MPE playing.

Blues Howl

Blues Howls is a haunting preset by the amazing Laurie Spiegel. Laurie’s credits include The Hunger Games, Music Mouse, and the Voyager Spacecraft.

Blues Howls is based on the chaotic Turbine oscillator, which is modulated by two slow moving sine LFOs set to beat against each other. When the the two LFOs align correctly this kicks the Turbine oscillator into chaos, causing an eerie howl.

Run that through the 259 wavefolder, resonant LPG, and a delay and this is what you get.

Tube Acid

Generate has a reputation as Cinematic Pad Machine, but it's also great at deep thunderous basses. Tube Acid uses the Turbine generator's Osc Sync and two Sub Oscillators to make a deep but resonant bass.

By driving this oscillator stack through the 259 Wavefolder and resonant Low Pass Gate we get a huge sound. Mapping Key Velocity to the resonance makes a very playable acid style synth.

Finally, the on board 4 band EQ scoops the mids and tailors a sound that fits your production.
